An appeal to build up a good conscience.
After two years of experiment with the co-adjutor bishop, Bishop Theophane took back the administration of the diocese from the junior bishop and made him the Vicar General of the diocese.During the tenure of Bishop Theophane crores of rupees had been poured into the diocese through the funding agencies especially in the field of education. Many school buildings have been constructed in the rural areas of the diocese to educate the poor tribals. Bishop got boardings for boys and girls built in almost all the mission stations. Where we did not have our mission schools the xhildren were sent to government schools. They were kept in our boardings and given special coaching to keep up the quality of education. .
Hundreds of poor families in the rural as well as city parishes were helped financially to educate their children. The motto of the diocese was "no child in the diocese should go without education because he / she is poor. Thousands of children were enrolled as beneficiaries of the poor family adoption scheme . But there were complaints that the full amount was not reaching the poor. Bishop Theophane became aware of these complaints of the people and he would tell his priests not to snatch away the bread from the poor children's mouth. He warned us that we would be punished if we practised such injustice. He told us priests to cultivate a good conscience within ourselves. Conscience is the voice of God. Our coscience tells us what is right and what is wrong. Towards the end of Bishop Theopphane's episcopate , the only theme he would speak about to his priests was "THECONSCIENCE",so that the priests would realize the evil in what they were doing and would stop such malpractices.
Animation programmes in Mission Stations
I got some fund from MISSIO, a funding agency in Germany for the promotion of Small Christian Communities in our diocese. I spoke to the priests about preparing village level leaders to help catechists in faith community building. I drew up a syllabus to prepare a sizeable number of church workers through a process of periodic training programmes. Eight rural parishes welcomed the programme. I took one parish at atime. Five lay leaders from each village of the parish came along with their catechists for a five day programme. During the five days of initial orientation we spoke to the trainees about their vocation to be a christian, importance of faith in Jesus, what Jesus can do in our lives, how we can share our faith with the others in the village both catholics and non catholics. Mr. Premlal Dhurwey, an efficient catechist, helped me with the programme at the pastoral centre. We used to have up to 140 participants from a parish at time. //-
