Can I be a Happy Person
Don't deny yourself a single day's happiness. (Sirach 14:13)
Three
frogs were sitting at the side of a pond. It was not a pleasant day for
them. As they watched the birds flying, they became more gloomy and
sad, because they could not enjoy flying in the vastness of the sky, fly
from one hill to another, one tree to the next. They could only swim in
the water, jump on the surface of the earth. They thought that it would
be superb if they had been endowed with the faculty of wings to fly.
And they began to imagine and ponder how nice it would be if they had
wings. The first frog said, “It must be wonderful to be a BIRD. It must
be thrilling to fly in the boundless sky—fly up and down, across, round
and hovering over the earth and water.” This thought made them unhappy.
The second frog came up with a still better desire and said, “It would
be nicer to be TWO BIRDS. If you were two birds you could fly behind
yourself.” The frogs pondered longer and became more unhappy and sadder
than before. After a long time a long silence the third frog said, “The
most beautiful feeling must be to be THREE BIRDS, because then you could
watch yourself fly behind yourself!.
We
have countless desires that may not be fulfilled. Aiming high and being
satisfied with what we get is healthy. Human being is never happy with
the present state of life. Always we want to be something else—one state
higher than the previous. There is no time to think of the present and
enjoy the numerous blessings showered on us abundantly.
Who decides whether you shall be happy or unhappy? The answer—you do!
A
television celebrity had as a guest on his programme an aged man. And
he was a very rare old man indeed. His remarks were entirely
unpremeditated and of course absolutely unrehearsed. They simply bubbled
up out of a personality that was radiant and happy. And whenever he
said anything, it was so naïve, so apt, that the audience roared with
laughter. They loved him. The celebrity was impressed, and enjoyed it
with the others. Finally he asked the old man why he was so happy. “You
must have a wonderful secret of happiness,” he suggested. “No,” replied
the old man, “I haven’t any great secret It’s just as plain as the nose
on your face. When I get up in the morning,” he explained, “I have two
choices—either to be happy or to be unhappy, and what do you think I do?
I just choose to be happy, that’s
all there is to it.” That may seem an over-simplification, and it may
appear that the old man was superficial, but I recall that Abraham
Lincoln, whom nobody could accuse of being superficial, said that people
were just about as happy as they made up their minds to be. You can be
unhappy if you want to be. It is the easiest thing in the world to
accomplish.

What
is happiness? True happiness is that which is related to God. The
yearning for bliss is the best proof of our holy nature. Man is bliss;
he seeks bliss, and bliss is blessedness for him. Since God is bliss,
happiness is union with God. Nothing else can award that joy which is
unaffected by whatever happens or does not happen.
Never feel depressed when you are weighed down by difficulties. Difficulties are part and parcel of the lives of great devotees. God subjects His devotees to tests so that their faith in Him can be strengthened and their hearts purified. However, God will never impose suffering on you that you cannot bear. Difficulties are meant for cleansing the vessel of your heart. Do not be afraid of difficulties as they are like passing clouds; do not waver. Follow your heart, which is steady and unwavering.

Few things to remember:
-- Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
--
Don't have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead
invest your energy in the positive present moment. Forget issues of the
past. Don't remind your partner with his/her mistakes of the past. That
will ruin your present happiness.
-- No one is in charge of your happiness except you
-- Each day give something good to others
-- Forgive everyone for everything
-- Spend time with people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6
-- Try to make at least three people smile each day
-- What other people think of you is none of your business
-- Do the right things
-- Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful
-- GOD heals everything
-- However good or bad a situation is, it will change
-- No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up
-- The best is yet to come
-- When you awake alive in the morning, thank GOD for it.
